Photonics Hot List: November 22, 2024

Nov. 22, 2024
In this episode: novel cooling film via radiative cooling, DEEPscope ventures deep into the brain, and SPIE announces its 2025 Prism Award finalists.

A team led by engineers at Pohang University of Science and Technology has designed a transparent cooling film based on radiative cooling. The development, detailed in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, could someday help regulate solar heat for environmental applications and architecture.

The DEEPscope microscope, developed at Cornell University and detailed in the journal eLight, can now facilitate the monitoring of wide-field neuronal activity in the deepest cortical layers of the brain, providing a clearer understanding of neuronal activity.

SPIE has announced the 2025 Prism Award finalists. To be handed out during Photonics West in January, the awards honor innovation through numerous categories: biomedical, cameras and imaging systems, lasers, optical materials and components, quantum technologies, sensors, software, and test and measurement. Recipients of the SPIE Startup Challenge and the Catalyst Award will also be announced.
