Photonics Hot List: January 17, 2025

Jan. 17, 2025
In this episode: A bio tagging tool illuminates RNA, a quasicrystal design boosts telecom, and the latest photonics mergers and acquisitions.

RNA is crucial to proper cell function, but exactly how it acts inside those cells has been a mystery. Now, researchers in California—in a study published in Nature Communications—have designed a way to see them using bioluminescence.

Researchers in Finland have developed an approach for creating light vortices via quasicrystal design. In research featured in Nature Communications, the team details how their process could significantly enhance telecommunications.

Recent mergers—including Thorlabs’ acquisition of Praevium Research, and the pairing of Exail and Leukos—promise to boost technology advancements and developments.
