Auburn Hills, MI—Under a Cooperation Agreement, Trumpf Inc. (Ditzingen, Germany) will supply production DMD machines that employ The POM Group Inc.'s patented Direct Metal Deposition (DMD) technology.

DMD (see ILS August 2001) is a laser-based metal fabrication process, commercialized by POM (www.pomgroup.com) that produces fully dense metal powder products "from the ground up" using metallic powder. Trumpf (www.us.trumpf.com) is the world's leading manufacturer of industrial high-power lasers and laser processing systems.

Under the agreement, Trumpf will supply five-axis, CNC controlled machines that incorporate the DMD process, together with the company's 5kW CO2 laser. Trumpf will market the machine under the name DMD 5050 in the third quarter of 2003.

Commenting on the new arrangement, Dr Jyoti Mazumder, CEO of The POM Group, says, "Trumpf brings a degree of engineering product quality and customer commitment that is unmatched in the industry."—DAB
