Munich, Germany—Berthold Leibinger, president and managing director of the TRUMPF Group, took the occasion of a press conference at the LASER 2003 trade fair to announce preliminary results of the company's 2002/2003 fiscal year that ended June 30th. He emphasized the importance of laser technology to TRUMPF where laser machines and sources accounted for 70 percent of total sales of 1.2 billion Euros. According to Leibinger, TRUMPF now holds 30 percent of the total industrial laser market.

How does TRUMPF achieve this level of sales in an otherwise dull market for industrial lasers? It does it by constantly introducing new products that respond to customer needs and by a foresighted approach to advancing the technology.

Two products, among five new introductions at the show, exemplify the company's leadership role. Added to its impressive arsenal of lasers are a diffusion-cooled 2kW CO2 laser scheduled for Spring 2004 availability and a 4kW solid-state disk laser.

The former is a compact sealed-off unit that the company believes will bridge the gap in its product line, opening up opportunities for a compact, lightweight, 2kW unit for low-cost sheet metal cutting and other applications in non-metals. The disk laser, a scale-up of a previously introduced lower-power unit, is designed to utilize excellent beam quality for applications such as cutting thin stainless steel and high-speed welding applications.
