Receiving the first prize was Professor Dr. Ursula Keller from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, for the invention of the Semiconductor Storable Absorber Mirror for Ultrafast Lasers. Second prize went to Professor Dr. Andreas Tünnermann, Dr. Stefan Nolte, and Dr. Holger Zellmer, a team from the Friedrich Schiller University and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering, for novel fiber laser design. The third prize was awarded to Dr. Axel Rolle for the development and application of a laser system with a wavelength that is especially effective on lung tissue.

Professor Leibinger, the prize founder, on congratulating the winners, said, "We need people with ideas and a zest for action who can work responsibly with these themes—people like our prize winners."
