Cape Town, South Africa - At a recent meeting here representatives of the South African wine industry expressed interest in laser printing variable data on bottle labels. By law the alcohol content, which varies by season, must be displayed on the bottle. Printing this information on the label after it is applied means that standard label designs and long label print runs are possible, producing significant savings.

Because of the growth in exports of South African wines it is really important that labels comply with regulations in Europe, the U.K., and Australia. Printing such varied information is complicated and expensive, however laser markers from Domino allow wineries to have their generic labels printed conventionally and then, when the wine is bottled, appropriate data and information can be applied by the laser.

Variable data printed by the laser provides quick and accurate tracking of products back to the producer so that the remainder of a particular product batch can be inspected and recalled if necessary.

Domino Printing Sciences plc (Cambridge, UK), a manufacturer of coding equipment, has more than 3000 laser markers installed in packaging lines worldwide. - DAB
