Optomec, Fryer partner on metal additive manufacturing equipment

Sept. 12, 2016
Fryer will integrate Optomec's metal additive manufacturing solution into its LaserFab 3D hybrid machining centers.

Optomec (Albuquerque, NM), which supplies production-grade additive manufacturing systems for 3D-printed metals, has signed an agreement with Fryer Machine Systems (Patterson, NY), which produces high-quality, affordable machine tools. Under the terms of the agreement, Fryer will integrate the Optomec LENS metal additive manufacturing solution into its new LaserFab 3D hybrid machining centers.

Pricing for Fryer's hybrid vertical machining centers (VMCs) will start at $350,000, which is less than half the cost of competing hybrid metal working machines.

Optomec has packaged its metal 3D printing solution into a modular LENS Print Engine for rapid integration with metal working platforms such as CNC mills, lathes, robots, custom gantries, or laser cutting and welding systems. The company's LENS family of 3D metal printers have been used in industry for more than 17 years to cost-effectively repair, rework, and manufacture high-performance metal components and wear coatings in materials such as titanium, stainless steel, carbides, and super alloys.

The LENS Print Engine will be integrated into Fryer's new LaserFab 3D hybrid machining centers, which feature a high-power fiber laser and a VMC for high-speed machining. The LaserFab can print and finish machine parts to a 4µm tolerance.
