Ditzingen, Germany - Developers and researchers working in the field of laser technology are again called to apply for the Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis. The deadline for applications and nominations is December 31, 2013. This international prize of the non-profit foundation Berthold Leibinger Stiftung has been granted every other year since 2000 for innovations pertaining to the application of lasers as well as to laser devices.
At the award ceremony on September 26, 2014, in Ditzingen, Germany, prizes of 30,000 euros for first, 20,000 euros for second, and 10,000 euros for the third will be awarded for the Innovationspreis. The prestigious Berthold Leibinger Zukunftspreis, a prize for laser research that is determined by the jury on the basis of secret nominations, will also be awarded with 30,000 euros.
Additionally, eight finalists will be honored as winners of the first evaluation process. They are invited to the jury session in April 2014 to present their innovations personally and to be presented with their award.
Individuals and project groups worldwide are eligible to apply if their main development efforts and market potential lie in the application of laser light or the development of laser devices.
According to the organization's web site, first place in 2012 went to scientists T.Y. Fan and Antonio Sanchez-Rubio at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory along with scientist and entrepreneur Bien Chann, co-founder of TeraDiode Inc., USA. Fan, Sanchez-Rubio, and Chann are the inventors of a concept for diode lasers with high brightness.
