Orlando, FL - The Laser Institute of America will feature a keynote address by noted additive manufacturing expert Dr. Prabhjot Singh at its third-annual Lasers for Manufacturing Event (LME; Sept. 11-12 in Schaumburg, IL), continuing the organization's industry-leading commitment to advancing laser additive manufacturing.
Singh, manager of the additive manufacturing lab for GE Global Research in Niskayuna, NN, will present key insights into state-of-the-art LAM and 3D printing during his talk on the second day of LME.
Singh, who has managed the AM lab at General Electric since August 2011, served nearly seven years as a mechanical engineer in GE’s product realization lab. He earned his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 2004.
His background in additive manufacturing extends far beyond the world of commercial AM machines. During his graduate studies at Michigan, he developed a process-planning framework for the five-axis layered deposition complex 3D CAD models. In addition, he developed a novel digital microprinting system for producing ceramics, a system now being employed to manufacture components in GE’s ultrasound probes. He leads the metal additive manufacturing activities at GE Global Research with a focus on the industrialization of laser powder-bed processes.
While additive manufacturing has existed for 25 years, media attention to the technology has snowballed recently. GE’s work was featured by the Wall Street Journal in its story “A Revolution In the Making” on the cover of the newspaper’s June 11 special report on innovation in manufacturing. Singh was the focus of a Fast Company innovators profile on May 23, 2012.
Singh’s address will be one of four 30-minute keynotes at LME 2013. Other speakers will address the main types of lasers used for manufacturing, including ultrafast and ultrahigh-brightness direct diodes, plus design and economic considerations when putting together a system for your applications.
This year’s LME will again feature the highly popular laser technology showcase on the exhibit floor at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel. The exhibit space is a unique collection of laser providers, system integrators, and industry experts sharing real-world experiences and up-to-the-minute information with the goal of employ lasers profitably in big-ticket industries like aerospace, automotive, defense, energy, and health care.
