State College, PA--The ASM International's Emerging Technologies Awareness Committee (ETAC) and Joining Critical Technologies Sector (JCTS) have scheduled the Materials Science & Technology 2010 Conference & Exhibition (MS&T ‘10), for October 17-21, in Houston, Texas.

The ETAC and JCTS are sponsoring a two day symposium entitled “Laser Applications in Materials Processing,” which will highlight emerging laser technologies. The purpose of the jointly sponsored symposium is to provide an update to ASM Members and other conference attendees on the dramatic recent advances in laser technology that have created new opportunities for the application of lasers in materials processing.

Also at MS&T ‘10 will be 12th Joining of Advanced and Specialty Materials (JASM XII), sponsored by the JCTS. This annual event will highlight various joining technologies including but not limited to: fundamentals and applications, experimental, analytical and computational studies, and characterization of microstructure, mechanical behavior, performance, in addition to other advanced joining techniques.

Abstracts relevant to laser joining of materials should be submitted to the jointly sponsored symposium and are expected to include topics of lasers applied to welding, cladding, and near net shape forming.
