Loughborough, UK – The beautiful and unique trophy shown in the photo was manufactured as an award presented at the Rapid Manufacturing International Conference held in Loughborough, UK. The trophy, designed by Lionel Dean of FutureFactories, was built by 3T RPD Ltd of Newbury, UK, using its direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) technology in cobalt chrome material, which was then given a highly polished finish using a micromachining process (MMP). This part was selected by the AILU as its most gorgeous part in its latest newsletter.

Lionel Dean as designer-in-residence at Huddersfield University (UK) began working on FutureFactories, a digital manufacturing (rapid prototyping) concept for the mass individualization of products.

3T RPD is a market leader in rapid product development, providing rapid prototyping and rapid manufacturing services to a diverse range of industry sectors. With the UK’s largest selective laser sintering (SLS) facility, 3T RPD is now leading the way in the supply of metal parts using direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) throughout the UK and Europe.

SLS and DMLS enable the cost-effective, fast and extremely accurate production of aesthetic models, functional prototypes and low volume production components. Built directly from 3D CAD data, they negate the need for conventional tooling. Offering a wide range of both plastic and metal materials, together with some of the world's largest laser sintering machines, they can supply parts in just a matter of days.
