Additive manufacturing company RPMI relocates to larger facility

Jan. 24, 2018
RPM Innovations (RPMI) has relocated to a facility that nearly triples its current capacity in laser material deposition production services.

Laser material deposition (an additive manufacturing technique) provider RPM Innovations (RPMI; Rapid City, SD) has relocated to a new 50,000-sq-ft. facility that meets the security requirements associated with commercial, aerospace, and defense applications. This facility nearly triples the company's current capacity in laser material deposition production services.

For nearly 15 years, RPMI has provided specialized services in powder-fed laser material deposition used for manufacturing freeform parts directly from computer-aided design (CAD) models, repairing parts previously considered non-repairable, and fabricating critical features on parts or forgings. The company's continuing innovations have grown the production services portion of the business to five RPMI laser material deposition systems running nearly 24/7.

Components associated with turbine engines, ducting, hypersonics, satellites, rocket engines, aero structures, oil/gas processing, chemical processing, and power generation are typical applications. The company is AS91000- and ISO 9001:2008-certified, and also ITAR-registered to support most applications. The space for additional machines will allow the company to maintain machine availability for quick turnaround to meet its customers' delivery requirements.

In addition to production services, the company offers CE-registered laser material deposition systems with a work envelope of 5 ft. (x-axis), 5 ft. (y-axis), and 7 ft. (z-axis) and employ fiber lasers up to 4 kW. The company began offering its laser material deposition systems for purchase in the latter part of 2014. Since then, it has delivered systems to corporations and institutions in North America, South America, and Europe. These systems are used for research and development, prototypes, industry qualifications, and production.
