Applied Optronics (South Plainfield, NJ), an OEM supplier of diode lasers and diode-laser modules for industrial, scientific, and medical applications, has established a new division, AOC Medical Systems, that is already manufacturing and marketing diode-laser systems in various wavelengths for medical applications. Our strength is visible red lasers between 650 and 690 nm, which are used in conjunction with second-generation photodynamic-therapy (PDT) drugs, says Doug Mead, vice president of regulatory affairs. We are already working with some companies in this area, and we are hoping to begin US clinical studies with a major second-generation-drug manufacturer for PDT. We are the only company that can do this in this wavelength range at this power—up to 8 W.
