Fujiyoshida City, Japan--Citizen Electronics has unveiled a white-light LED package that emits as much light as a 300 W mercury lamp, producing a luminous flux of 17,675 lm. It is manufactured in a "chip-on-aluminum" configuration for high heat removal, and the materials and surfaces are chosen for maximum light-extraction efficiency. It is a 184 W device, but has a much higher luminous efficacy than a mercury lamp.

The individual LED dice (or "dies," or even "die," as some people say) are placed within the package to fill a circular area, rather than the more common square area. This makes the emitted light circularly symmetric, eliminating patchy areas of light.

The high-intensity device is actually one of a range of LEDs that emit from 100 lm to 17,675 lm. Colors range from the blue-white (5000 K, Ra = 65) of the brightest LED to other emitters with color temperatures of 2700, 3000, and 4000 K (warm white through cool white).

Luminous efficacy varies depending on color temperature and drive conditions, but can be as high as 155 lm/W.

Mass production will begin in November 2011.
