A CoolLine option for the company's 2D laser cutting machines implements a water mist to cool material as it is laser-cut, fully integrating into the cutting process by way of a laser cutting head, varying nozzles, and a water supply tank. With the option, cutting small sidewalls and difficult geometries in thick material and nesting parts more closely together are possible.

TRUMPF keeps laser cutting cool with CoolLine
FARMINGTON, Conn. – TRUMPF has introduced CoolLine, a new option for its TRUMPF 2D laser cutting machines which implements a water mist to cool material as it is laser cut. CoolLine is fully integrated into the cutting process by way of a specially designed laser cutting head, varying nozzles and a water supply tank. With CoolLine, fabricators achieve higher quality cuts with smaller contours or greater complexity for increased flexibility and have the ability to nest parts more closely together.
While processing, the CoolLine nozzle directs a water mist around the laser beam as it reaches the work piece. In doing so, CoolLine reduces the heat transferred in the immediate cutting zone and achieves contours that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to process. With this new option the user is able to cut small sidewalls and difficult geometries more efficiently, especially in thick material. It also achieves a considerable increase in process reliability when laser processing low-grade material or material of varying composition.
In addition to greater flexibility in laser processing contours, there is a significant cost-advantage when cutting nests in thick material. Since the CoolLine option prevents the material from overheating, it allows parts to be nested more closely than was previously possible. By removing the heat and reducing the gap, fabricators process more parts and reduce scrap. Smaller webs significantly reduce the amount of raw material between parts, allow fabricators to more fully utilize the sheet and thereby achieve greater profits.
TRUMPF is one of the world’s largest producers of fabricating machinery and a world market leader in lasers used for industrial production technology. Additional company information is available at: www.us.trumpf.com
