Nov. 6, 2009
November 6, 2009--Strategies Unlimited (Mountain View, CA) and PennWell Corporation (Tulsa, OK) will host their 11th annual business-oriented conference and exhibition on high-brightness (HB) LEDs and lighting on February 10-12, 2010 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA. Strategies in Light will include, for the second year, an expanded conference with a separate lighting track for lighting designers, specifiers, architects, and luminaire manufacturers.

Strategies in Light will include, for the second year, an expanded conference with a separate lighting track for lighting designers, specifiers, architects, and luminaire manufacturers (see also "Lighting brightens LED market" and "Strategies in Light Europe to focus on HB LEDs and lighting").

The focus of this special lighting designers track, which attracted a standing-room crowd last year, will be to address the many issues associated with the use of LEDs in lighting that are of concern to the lighting community. Presentations will provide insights on the market for LED luminaires and replacement lamps, the use of LED lighting in energy efficient buildings, and the financing of LED lighting projects. A special session, including a panel discussion, will address the important issues around truth in labeling for LED lighting products.

In conjunction with the lighting track, the conference will offer two tutorials on LEDs, including LED Fundamentals for Lighting Designers and Architects and Specifying LED Lighting Fixtures: What LightingDesigners and Specifiers Need to Know. These tutorials will be in addition to pre-conference workshops on design for LED luminaire reliability, intellectual property, quality of light for LEDs, and selecting drivers for LEDs.

A new feature added for 2010 is the Solid-State Lighting Investor Forum. The intent of this pre-conference session will be to bring together selection of exciting pre-public start-up companies that are developing solid-state lighting technologies with an audience of investors to provide investors with an opportunity to evaluate the companies as investment prospects.

Featured speakers for the conference's HB LED market track will include: Derry Berrigan, Principal, DBLD Sustainable Lighting Design; James Brodrick, Lighting Program Manager, US Department of Energy; and Cary Eskow, Director, Avnet LightSpeed. In addition, Robert Steele, Conference Co-Chair and Director of Optoelectronics Programs, Strategies Unlimited, will provide his annual update on the market for HB LEDs, along with a five-year forecast.

Other companies and organizations contributing to the HB LED market track include Philips Lumileds Lighting, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Canaccord Adams, Osram Opto Semiconductors, Cree, mSilica, Nichia, QD Vision, Oree, Telelumen LLC, Inventronics, Lynk Labs, Bayer Material Science, CH2M Hill, GrafTech International, and Op-Test.

Featured speakers for the lighting track include Ted Konnerth, President and CEO, Egret Consulting Group and Lars R. Bylund, Professor of Light and Energy, Bergen School of Architecture. Vrinda Bhandarkar, Senior Market Research Analyst at Strategies Unlimited will summarize the results of the company's latest research on LED luminaire and replacement lamp market trends. Other participating companies and organizations include D & R International; Lightswitch Architectural; Canlyte Philips; Johnson Controls; Luminae Souter Associates, LLC; City of San Jose, Department of Transportation; Gabriel Mackinnon; and Philips Lumileds Lighting.

Last year Strategies in Light attracted over 2000 participants from North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Australia--38 countries in all. LED Japan Conference & Expo/Strategies in Light recently held in Yokohama, Japan, drew more than 5300 attendees which nearly doubled the total set in 2008 (see "LED Japan 2009 nearly doubles attendance").
