Trumpf acquires Philips' Laser Diode Division

Philips Photonics' laser diodes are used in smartphones, digital data transmission, and sensors for autonomous driving.

Laser maker Trumpf (Ditzingen, Germany) is acquiring 100% of Photonics GmbH from Philips (Ulm, Germany), opening up a new market segment for Trumpf in addition to its existing business with high-power diode lasers and expanding its product portfolio.

Laser diodes from Philips Photonics are used, for example, in smartphones, digital data transmission, and sensors for autonomous driving. The company employs around 280 people.

Both companies have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. The transaction is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2019, pending approval from the authorities.
