Interference filters can be customized to specific uses, such as in space observation. Extremely narrow bandpass filters let astronomers analyze narrow spectral regions of starlight while blocking out unwanted wavelengths. The filters are conceived for low wavefront errors, and have a homogeneous transmission spectrum across the entire surface of ~ 106 × 106 mm.
