Auburn, MA--Parallel precision positioning specialist PI (Physik Instrumente) has added a new building with more production floors, metrology labs, and R&D office space to its Karlsruhe, Germany-based factory.

Close to 4,500 sq. ft. is dedicated to manufacturing and testing of six-axis hexapod motion systems that can move loads of up to 5 tons with sub-micrometer precision. To verify accuracy of the high-load precision positioners, special metrology rooms are available that are filled with interferometers and other test equipment. A giant lift and rotation platform is used to rotate the six-axis positioner with its load by 360 degrees to verify the performance under the exact mounting conditions of the customer's site.

Hexapod precision positioning systems are used in many applications, including optics alignment, medical tumor treatment, high-energy physics, and aerospace and semiconductor manufacturing.
