Solid-state thermoelectric cooling units SD-330 and SD-250 are suitable for laser diode modules in medical and industrial applications without water cooling. They provide a high safety margin, reduced fan noise, or high cooling capacity up to 330 W. They fit diodes measuring from 50 × 100 mm to 124 × 130 mm.

Compact and highly efficient thermoelectric cooling units for laser diode modules

Martinsried, 17th February 2010 - AMS Technologies presents its powerful thermoelectric cooling units SD-330 and SD-250. Suitable for laser diode modules in medical and industrial applications, these solid state cooling units omit the need of water cooling and let users benefit from either high safety margin, reduced fan noise or high cooling capacity of up to 330 W.

The cooling units have been designed for laser diode modules with footprints from 50 x 100 up to a maximum of 124 x 130 mm. Utilising two 60 mm axial fans, a copper high performance heat sink, 6 peltier modules and a copper spreader and mounting plate the units distinguish themselves through compact dimensions, high cooling capacity and low energy consumption. With a width of 162, a length of 182 to 188 depending on which fans are used and a height of 92 mm the units will occupy little space underneath the laser diode module itself. Using the stronger fans a cooling capacity of 330 W is reached when ambient temperature equals the temperature at the laser mounting plate. The maximum power consumption is 15 A at 24 V DC.

“The idea was to offer a reliable cooling unit with enough safety margin if the ambient temperature goes up or the efficiency is reduced at one or the other point of the entire laser system”, says Dr. Konrad Laufs, division manager of AMS Technologies. “The reliability that we guarantee lies in the special expertise and skills of our Russian partner. When they assemble a thermoelectric unit, the performance is always 10 to 20% higher than when our customer try to do it themselves”, he continues. Kryotherm, St. Petersburg, is the manufacturer of the peltier modules and the place where the cooling units are assembled.

The cooling units may be customized for different models and brands of laser diode modules, fans, power supply parameters, packaging or less weight. Suitable temperature controllers are available from AMS Technologies.
