PRESS RELEASE
Vision Research Introduces Phantom® v641
Digital High-Speed Camera
Phantom® v641 Camera Targets Industrial, Scientific,
Research, Military and Broadcast Applications
WAYNE, N.J., January 4, 2011 – Vision Research, a leading manufacturer of digital high-speed imaging systems, has released the Phantom® v641, the company’s next generation 4 megapixel camera and follow up to its groundbreaking Phantom v640. Smaller and lighter weight than the v640, the new v641 uses technology that recently won an Emmy® Award for its high-definition, ultra-slow-motion capabilities. The Phantom v641 offers industry-leading innovation and flexibility that allows users significant flexibility to record and deliver impressive slow-motion images in just about any application or environment ranging from scientific research to commercial broadcasting.
Upgrades Define the v641
The Phantom v641 has a number of new user-requested convenience features, including:
· Dual power inputs for battery backup or hot-swapping batteries when under battery power
· The viewfinder port was moved forward on the camera to make cabling cleaner and less intrusive
· Two auxiliary power ports that can provide 12-volt DC (1.5A) power for accessories – and each has an available trigger signal input
· Dual cooling fans that ensure temperature stability and thus exceptional image quality over a wide range of environmental conditions
The v641 supports SMPTE and IRIG timecoding in and out. Additionally, a remote port allows users to connect the Phantom Remote Control Unit directly to the camera (or use the convenient Bluetooth™ wireless dongle). There are optional on-camera controls to allow users access to common camera operations. The v641 comes standard with an Internal Mechanical Shutter for "hands free" session references, and Vision Research’s unique Image-Based Auto-Trigger – an ideal solution for capturing rare or asynchronous events. Timing resolution of less than 20ns makes it the ideal high-speed imaging solution for particle image velocimetry (PIV) applications.
Versatile Dual HD-SDI ports give users maximum flexibility for video workflows and broadcast applications. The two ports can be configured as a single dual-link 4:4:4 port, be used separately as identical 4:2:2 ports, or be configured to provide a live image on one port, while the second can simultaneously be playing back a recorded clip.
Emmy-Winning Technology
Vision Research’s ultra-slow-motion technology has been widely adopted in sporting and other live events around the world, including the Super Bowl, World Series, Olympics, World Cup, and Commonwealth Games. This technology also is used in television commercials and motion pictures and is a key component of the 3D imaging in many Hollywood films.
The v641 provides a 4 megapixel 35mm format sensor and greater than 6 gigapixels/second throughput. That means full-resolution frame rates of 1450 frames-per-second (fps), and 1920x1080 HD-resolution frame rates of 2560 fps. The minimum frame rate is 10 fps.
Vision Research’s custom-designed 2560x1600 pixel CMOS sensor (color or monochrome) provides a wide field of view. The v641’s aspect ratio allows users to keep moving targets in-frame longer and see more of the event being recorded. With shutter speeds down to 1 microsecond and a global electronic shutter, crisp, sharp images are guaranteed with little or no image blur or motion artifacts.
Storing and Recording Options
The v641 includes 8 GB of built in high-speed dynamic RAM with 16 GB and 32GB versions also available. A unique segmented memory feature allows users to divide images into up to 63 segments, creating multiple back-to-back shots without the need to download data from the camera. Any memory segment can be uploaded to a Phantom CineMag, a non-volatile hot-swappable memory magazine that comes in 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB versions. Or, record directly to the Phantom CineMag at up to 800 megapixels-per-second. CineMags can be moved to the CineStation® allowing for easy viewing, editing and saving without tying up valuable camera time.
Additional High-Performance Features Include:
- 10-1450 frames-per-second (fps) at full resolution
- Maximum FPS: 219,000 at 256 x 8
- High-resolution timing system: better than 20 nanoseconds resolution
- Extreme Dynamic Range (EDR): two different exposures within a single frame
- Internal Mechanical Shutter Mechanism
- Range Data Input
- Breakthrough Sensitivity: ISO (12232 SAT) 1000 Color, 4000 Mono; QE 60% peak; NEP 0.011fJ
- Pixel Bit-depth: 12-bit
- 2.5 microsecond straddle time for PIV applications
- Gb Ethernet, 10 Gb Ethernet with optional CineStream X2SR
- Image-Based Auto-Trigger
- Burst Mode
- Analog video out: PAL, NTSC and HD Component (720p)
- HD-SDI: All standard formats
- Lensing: F-Mount, C-Mount, PL-Mount
