IDS USB 3.0 industrial cameras offer 12-bit color depth
The USB 3.0 uEye CP industrial cameras offer advanced color processing capabilities, with three available sensors ranging from VGA to 5 Mpixels, and achieve data rates of up to 400 Mbyte/s. With a magnesium-coated camera housing measuring 29 × 29 × 29 mm, the cameras' features include trigger, flash, and pulse-width modulation; 12-bit color depth, and an field-programmable gate array (FPGA) that performs de-bayering with up to 12 bits/channel and allows RGB or YUV data output.

PRESS RELEASE
IDS Introduces Ultra-Compact USB 3.0 Industrial Cameras
-- New USB 3.0 interface is 10X faster than USB 2.0 --
WOBURN, MA, January 5, 2012 -- IDS GmbH, a global leader in medical vision and machine vision technology, is introducing a new family of extremely compact USB 3.0 industrial cameras with advanced color processing capabilities. Three different sensors are available for the new USB 3.0 uEye cameras, ranging from VGA to 5 Megapixel with additional sensors to follow.
Measuring a mere 29 x 29 x 29 mm, the new USB 3.0 uEye CP cameras feature a housing that is not only amazingly small, but due to its magnesium casing is also lightweight and exceptionally robust to withstand the rigors of manufacturing settings.
10X Speed of USB 2.0
Available the first quarter of 2012, USB 3.0 uEye CP cameras are some of the first to incorporate the USB 3.0 or "SuperSpeed" USB interface. This technology delivers significant advantages compared to the most common interfaces in the machine vision area, including a possible ten-fold increase in data rate of up to 400 MByte/s compared to USB 2.0's 40 MByte/s, or 100 Mbytes/s for GigE. The USB 3.0 interface also achieves simple and easy implementation and operation, especially in multi-camera industrial systems. Another advantage is that USB 3.0 is backwards compatibility allowing for the continued use of existing USB 2.0 systems.
The USB 3.0 uEye CP camera series is perfectly suited for a wide variety of vision applications, including industrial, medical and biometrics. It offers trigger, flash and pulse width modulation, as well as two GPIOs (General Purpose I / O) which can be changed into a serial interface (RS232) so that peripheral devices can be triggered or controlled. In addition, thanks to their micro USB 3.0 connector and the available fittings, the cameras are also excellent for harsh industrial environments.
The USB 3.0 uEye CP boasts brightness correction realized by a 12-bit lookup table and hardware gamma. When compared to standard 8-bit, the 12-bit color depth offers 16X the level of detail.
Color Processing
The USB 3.0 uEye CP has an FPGA that does de-bayering with up to 12 bit per channel and allows the camera to output RGB or YUV data, thus taking load off the CPU. It also does color correction and thus renders great and true-to-life color quality.
Live Demonstration
As part of its introduction at the Vision 2011 tradeshow in Stuttgart, Germany, IDS staged a multi-camera demo system featuring eight USB 3 uEye CP cameras for attendees of the show. All eight USB 3 cameras were equipped with a 1.3 Megapixel sensor from e2v. Each camera delivered 25 frames per second, resulting in a total data load of 250 MByte/s. This data was transferred via a single USB 3.0 cable into the host PC without any losses. Despite the high amount of data, the CPU load was a mere 20 percent, thanks to the sophisticated camera drivers.
Software Package
To simplify deployment of the USB 3.0 eye CP camera family, IDS offers a software package for Microsoft® Windows® and Linux that includes 32/64 bit drivers, demo programs, and source code in C + +, C # and VB. As a result, mixed operation of IDS USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and GigE cameras is easily achieved.
