WASHINGTON, DCâThe Optical Society (OSA) announced today that Gerard M. Zack has joined its staff as the deputy executive director and chief operating officer (COO). In this position, Zack will be responsible for an annual budget of $30 million and will oversee society operations, including finance, legal, customer service, human resources, information technology, and building administration.
As the deputy executive director and COO, Zack will be a member of the organizationâs executive team, advancing strategic directions, identifying new business development opportunities, and enhancing long-term planning. Zack also will be responsible for regular communications with OSAâs Board of Directors, select steering committees, and other organizational stakeholders in his areas of oversight.

Previously, Zack founded and served as president of Zack, P.C., which specialized in providing financial and strategic management, process improvement, internal control, risk management, internal audit, governance, fraud prevention consulting, and compliance and ethics programs for nonprofit organizations throughout the U.S. and Europe. Zack also founded the Nonprofit Resource Center, through which he provided training and online financial management tools specifically geared toward the unique financial and operational management needs of nonprofit organizations.
Both a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Zack was the 2009 recipient of the James Baker Speaker of the Year Award from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) and is recognized as one of only nine fellows in the 55,000-member ACFE based on his contributions to the anti-fraud field. He serves on the faculty of the ACFE and is also a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and a Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP). He has been brought in by more than 50 CPA firms to provide customized internal staff training on specialized issues of nonprofit organizations. He is a frequent speaker at national conferences, including those sponsored by the ACFE, AICPA, ASAE, and many other professional associations.
Zack earned his M.B.A. at Loyola University in Maryland and B.S.B.A. at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.
