David C. Hanna, professor of physics, deputy director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre at the University of Southampton (England), and member of the Laser Focus World editorial advisory board, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Hanna was honored for his contributions to the understanding of laser physics and the control of laser devices. His innovative and pioneering approach has created a new generation of lasers that are compact, stable, highly efficient, and capable of operating at new wavelengths. He is currently working on fiber lasers, visible up-conversion lasers, and ion-implanted crystal waveguides.
