According to the United States Enrichment Corp. (USEC; Bethesda, MD), the atomic vapor laser isotope separation (AVLIS) process successfully passed the latest in a series of tests designed to show that it can enrich uranium to a level approaching that necessary for commercial plant operation. The demonstration is the culmination of a series of nine test runs over the past two years at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (Livermore, CA) aimed at building and operating the key AVLIS components at plant scale.
