Washington, DC--Ganesh Gopalakrishnan has joined the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA) as executive technical director, where he will oversee all OIDA programs and provide leadership of the organization’s technical and business activities in support of OIDA’s mission to advance the optoelectronics industry.

Specifically, Gopalakrishnan will work with the OIDA Board of Directors, volunteers, and staff to plan events, organize programming, and participate in OIDA workshops, meetings, and forums. He will also oversee the development of OIDA industry reports and other publications. Additionally, he will conduct advocacy activities on behalf of OIDA member companies and the industry as a whole, facilitate dialogs between government agencies and member companies, and pursue grant opportunities on behalf of OIDA.

“Ganesh’s vast and varied experience in the optoelectronics industry will provide OIDA with an invaluable leadership perspective,” said Richard Grzybowski, OIDA Board chairman. “His background in and knowledge of both the technical and business development facets of the optoelectronics industry will enhance OIDA’s programs and activities, as we look to expand our offerings and contributions to the industry and our members.”

Gopalakrishnan has more than 20 years of experience in the telecommunications and optoelectronics industries. A recognized expert on high-speed optical modulation, Gopalakrishnan founded CODEON/Covega (now Thorlabs Quantum Electronics) in 1999, and grew the company to the stature of becoming a globally recognized supplier of optical components to the telecommunications industry. Since 2008 he has served as an independent consultant providing advanced technology consultancy services to the U.S. Department of Defense and commercial entities. Gopalakrishnan holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University, and is a Fellow of the IEEE.
