January 25, 2007, Glasgow, United Kingdom--Intense introduced its Hermes family of High Power Laser (HPL) products, this week at Photonics West 2007 in San Jose, CA. Hermes is designed for use in industrial, medical, defense, and aerospace applications where high brightness and optical conversion efficiency are needed to improve system performance, increase reliability and product lifetimes, and reduce energy consumption. Available as diodes, bars, and stacks, the lasers are compact, modular units based on Intense's patented Quantum Well Intermixing (QWI) process. Targeted applications include solid state pump sources, welding and soldering systems, military rangefinders, and illuminators.
"Many demanding applications, such as airborne systems, require high brightness and efficiency in the face of constrained power," said John Marsh, CTO at Intense and developer of the company's patented QWI design process. "Hermes High Power Lasers are based on a compact architecture with powerful optical output. High brightness and optical conversion efficiency improve overall system performance and reduce energy consumption. The product's enhanced lifetime and high reliability lower cost of ownership. Additionally, high power ratings as a direct energy source reduce system costs."
