Austrian quantum physicist Peter Zoller wins Toptica-sponsored Norman F. Ramsey Prize

Feb. 23, 2018
Zoller has contributed greatly to quantum computing, many forms of which rely on laser-trapped ions, atoms, and molecules.

Peter Zoller, a physicist and professor at Universität Innsbruck (Innsbruck, Austria) who has contributed greatly to the field of quantum computing, quantum optics, and quantum communications, has received the American Physical Society's 2018 Norman F. Ramsey Prize in Atomic, Molecular and Optical (AMO) Physics, and in Precision Tests of Fundamental Laws and Symmetries Recipient. As a sponsor of the APS 2018 Norman F. Ramsey Prize, Toptica Photonics (Munich, Germany) has congratulated Peter Zoller "for his pioneering theoretical work on quantum computation, communication, and simulation with trapped ions, atoms, and molecules."

The Norman F. Ramsey Prize was established in 2016 by the APS; Ramsey has excelled both in AMO physics and in precision tests of fundamental laws and symmetries. This was the first year the prize was both awarded and presented during the Division of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics (DAMOP) annual meeting in May (held this year in Ft. Lauderdale, FL).
