Leica Microsystems Debuts First 3D Surgical Microscopes with TrueVision® Technology Inside, at AANS Annual Meeting in New Orleans

Surgeons Benefit from Easy 3D Recording and Video Editing, More Space to Maneuver in the Operating Room and Upgradable Platform for Future Surgical Guidance Applications

Wetzlar, Germany / Santa Barbara, CA, USA. Leica Microsystems and TrueVision® 3D Surgical announced the debut of 3D surgical microscopes at the 81st Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS). By incorporating the digital smart 3D system inside select models of Leica Microsystems' surgical microscopes, Leica Microsystems and TrueVision® have eliminated the need for a separate 3D cart. Surgeons can control the 3D recording functions, without interrupting their workflow, via the microscope hand and foot controls, and OR staff will benefit from easier, faster setup and more space to maneuver in the operating room. The TrueVision® 3D platform is also upgradable to support future surgical guidance applications.

Leica Microsystems will be presenting two 3D microscope systems, the Leica M720 OH5 and Leica M525 OH4 with TrueVision® technology inside at this year's Annual Scientific Meeting of the AANS in New Orleans, April 27th to May 1st, 2013. Surgeons will be able to preview the systems during AANS exhibit hours in Leica Microsystems' booth #639. On Monday and Tuesday April 29th and 30th, 9:15 am, Burton Tripathi, PhD, CTO and EVP of TrueVision, will be presenting "Digital Convergence: Bringing 3D Imaging to Neurosurgery" in the Leica exhibit theater in booth #639.

Eoghan O'Lionaird, President, Leica Microsystems, commented: "These 3D surgical microscopes are the result of a very fruitful collaboration between Leica Microsystems and TrueVision. The products represent another milestone in Leica Microsystems' history of technological innovation in the field of surgical microscopy. For the first time ever, neurosurgeons will have access to a surgical microscope with a fully integrated, digital 3D system built inside."

"At MD Anderson, world-class neurosurgical education has been elevated by the incorporation of Leica and TrueVision 3D," says Dr. Nicholas B. Levine, Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. "I can seamlessly transition between 2D and 3D recording, editing and teaching. I look forward to the introduction of TrueVision's smart guidance applications for the 3D platform to complement and extend existing technologies used in the OR today."
