The path of the SodiumStar laser beam through the atmosphere can be seen due to Rayleigh scattering, but the visibility falls to zero after a few tens of kilometers of height. When the beam enters the mesosphere's sodium layer at 100 km altitude, however, it generates the artificial star needed for adaptive-optics correction. Pointing the guide star at Saturn not only helps to orient in the night sky but leads to impressive snapshots.
